Introduction to Airsoft

Airsoft is an exciting team sport that combines tactics, strategy and action. Originating in Japan, the sport has spread around the world and is enjoyed by millions of players. Whether you are looking for a team feeling, want to improve your tactics or just want to have fun - airsoft offers you all that and more!

Basic equipment for beginners

Would you also like to play airsoft, but don't know what you need? Don't worry, as a beginner you don't need expensive equipment. The basic equipment includes airsoft, goggles and comfortable clothing. However, there is some equipment that can make it easier for you to get started!

Especially at the beginning it is recommended to grid mask This protects your nose, mouth and, depending on the model, your ears from BBs and can save you from unpleasant hits.

Safety instructions

Safety comes first with airsoft! Here are some basic tips that every player should follow:

Always wear safety goggles and make sure they are of high quality. Under no circumstances should you use goggles that have a metal mesh instead of lenses. When
BBs can break on impact and the splinters could penetrate the mesh and injure your eyes.

Respect the rules and joule limits of the playing field.

With these simple measures, you can ensure that the fun is maintained for everyone.

What do I need to consider when buying my first airsoft?

Airsofts differ mainly in the type of drive. There are various options for you to choose from.

  • Spring pressure (Spring)
  • Electric (AEG / S-AEG)
  • Gas (Green Gas / CO2)
  • Compressed air (HPA)

Spring pressure (Spring)

A spring-loaded Airsoft uses a mechanical spring to fire the BBs. When the airsoft is cocked manually, the spring is compressed and when the trigger is pulled, the spring is released and the BB is fired through the barrel.

Advantages:

  • No batteries, rechargeable batteries or gas required
  • Cheaper to purchase

Disadvantages:

  • The airsoft has to be cocked after every shot, which can put you in tricky situations during the game.

Electric (AEG / S-AEG)

Electric airsofts use a rechargeable battery to fire the BBs.

In Germany, these airsofts may be fully automatic up to an energy of 0.5 joules (therefore AEG = Automatic Electric Gun).

Above 0.5 joules, these airsofts may only be semi-automatic in Germany (hence S-AEG = Semi-Automatic Electric Gun)

Advantages:

  • Fast firing sequence or even a fully automatic airsoft
  • Large selection of models

Disadvantages:

  • Depends on battery that needs to be charged regularly
  • Limited range with 0.5 joule models

Gas (Green Gas / CO₂)

Gas-powered airsofts use propellants such as green gas, CO₂ or propane to fire the BBs. The gas is stored in a magazine or directly in the gun and is released by the trigger, causing the BBs to be shot out of the barrel under pressure.

Advantages:

  • Many models have a blowback systemwhich simulates recoil and conveys an authentic feel.
  • Consistent performance and known for its shooting power and range.
  • Refilling with gas or replacing a CO₂ capsule is quick and easy.
  • No battery to recharge.

Disadvantages:

  • Green Gas and CO₂ are sensitive to cold environments and performance can be affected.
  • Gas magazines have a limited tank; if the gas pressure drops, the shooting performance also decreases.
  • Gas magazines can leak if dropped on the ground and thus lose their function.

Magazine types

There are various magazine types for airsofts, which differ in terms of capacity and functionality:

Low-cap magazines (low capacity):
These magazines usually hold 30 to 80 BBs. They are ideal for players who prefer an authentic gaming experience, but require more frequent reloading.

Mid-Cap Magazines (Mid Capacity):
Mid-cap magazines have a capacity of around 100 to 160 BBs. They offer a good compromise between realistic reloading frequency and sufficient ammunition quantity, without the annoying rattling of high-cap magazines.

High-cap magazines (high capacity):
These magazines hold up to 300 or more BBs and are ideal for long, uninterrupted firing sequences. However, they must be wound manually, which reduces the realistic feel and the rattling of the BBs inside can often be heard.

The choice of magazine depends on your playing style and type of airsoft. Consider whether realism, high capacity or a balanced mix of both aspects is more important to you.

To load the magazines, we recommend using a speedloader to load the magazines. This saves you time and effort.

Airsoft ammunition

The airsoft bullets, also known as BBs are available in different variants and weights. When buying, you should make sure you choose organic BBs. These are made from biodegradable materials such as corn starch and decompose in nature over time. Organic BBs are mandatory on most outdoor airsoft pitches.

Then there are tracer BBs, which are special luminescent BBs coated with a fluorescent material. They are "charged" with UV light by a tracer attachment and emit the light during their flight. This creates an impressive tracer effect.

The weight of the BBs plays a decisive role in the trajectory, precision and range. Typical weights range from 0.12 g to 0.45 g, the choice of the right weight depends on your airsoft and its intended use.

For a fully automatic airsoft with 0.5 joules or an airsoft pistol, 0.25 g BBs are completely sufficient. For a long gun with 1.3 to 1.7 joules, you should use 0.30g to 0.35g BBs. If you are playing an airsoft sniper, you should use BBs with a weight of 0.35g or higher to guarantee maximum precision.

As a rule of thumb, the lighter the BB, the faster it flies, but it is also more easily affected by wind. With the right ammunition, you can get the best out of your airsoft.

Airsoft shells

Airsoft grenades are tactical tools that make the gaming experience more realistic and exciting. They are used to drive opponents out of cover, secure areas or exert strategic pressure. Most grenades are based on compressed air, gas or springs.

The ASG Storm 360 grenade is reusable and is loaded with gas and BBs, on impact it triggers and sprays the BBs in a 360° radius.

However, there are also disposable airsoft grenades that explode and release BBs.

Airsoft grenades may be subject to restrictions depending on field rules and safety regulations. Make sure that you only use approved models and pay attention to the rules of the respective playing fields.

Transportation of airsoft and battery

Safe transportation of an airsoft is essential to avoid misunderstandings and legal problems.

When transporting your Airsoft, you must ensure that it is not ready to access and fire. This means that your Airsoft must be in a lockable container such as a bag or a suitcase separately from the ammunition. A padlock is suitable for locking.

If you own an electric airsoft, you should remove the battery after use and store it in a Li-Po safety bag transport. This minimizes the risk of fire or
explosions that can occur with lithium polymer batteries due to overheating, damage or short circuits. It keeps flames, heat and smoke under control
and at the same time protects the battery from mechanical damage.

Especially during transportation, for example to airsoft events, the safety bag offers safety for you, other people and your equipment - a simple and effective precautionary measure.

An ETU (Electronic Trigger Unit) is an electric airsoft trigger that replaces the mechanical trigger. A mechanical trigger generates a lot of friction and heat during a rapid firing sequence, which can lead to rapid wear. The ETU avoids this problem.

A spring quick-change system makes it possible to change the spring of an airsoft gun quickly and easily without having to completely disassemble the entire gearbox. This allows you to adjust the shot energy (FPS/Joule) of your airsoft depending on the rules of the field or playing style.

The hop-up is a component of the airsoft which gives the BBs a slight twist, if it is set correctly you increase the range of your airsoft.

A MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) is an electronic component used in airsoft guns with electric drives (AEGs). It is used to regulate the current flow between the battery and the motor. The use of a MOSFET improves energy efficiency, protects the trigger contacts from wear and extends the service life of the electrical components.

In a gear jam, the gears in the gearbox can no longer rotate fully and the airsoft is no longer able to fire a shot.
