The aim of this study on NATO's special forces is to create a work that offers the best possible overview at the current time. However, NATO special forces are in a constant state of change. NATO is 70 years old at the time of writing. A lot has changed from the early days in 1949 to today in 2019, although many of NATO's special forces trace their roots back to the British SAS or the British Commandos. Italy and Germany, as well as some Eastern European countries, are exceptions here. NATO's eastward expansion has also led to very great challenges. Special forces had to be integrated and harmonized, which were previously trained and equipped under very different conditions. The annexation of Crimea and the conflict in Eastern Ukraine also pose new threats to the alliance. In addition, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is casting an uneasy eye on the Baltic states, which feel threatened by their large neighbor but are now an important part of NATO. NATO's special forces must also be able to deal with the new, hybrid warfare. In addition, there is the integration of female SOF troopers, UAV operators and cyber specialists. However, no false impression should be created here. Russia continues to be an important political interlocutor for Europe at all levels. Due to the constant changes, this book can only be a current inventory at the time of writing, including a retrospective. Although SOF have strategic importance in NATO, they only function in a complex big picture in interaction with many other global players from all branches of the armed forces, politics, business, society, authorities and cyberspace. NATO SOF are therefore only one aspect of a comprehensive operation, but also more than just the sum of its parts.
